Last weekend, the Santa Monica Vikings Mitey Mite football team participated in the Pacific Coast Conference’s JR Rose Bowl Invitational Tournament. The tournament included teams from San Diego, Fresno, Los Angeles, Las Vegas (NV) and Tuscon (AZ). The Vikings which is primarily composed of 8 and 9 years olds competed against teams primarily composed of 10 and 11 year olds given the teams from different leagues are governed by different age and weight limits. The Vikings played three challenging games and after a 38-20 victory against the Skyline Tigers of San Diego (and a 3-0 tournament record) were crowned the 2009 Mighty Might JR Rose Bowl Champions. Throughout the tournament the Vikings outscored their opponents 96-38, never trailed at half time and never punted. In the 20 year history of the JR Rose Bowl Tournament, until this year no team from Santa Monica had ever been crowned tournament champion. Including scrimmages, the teamed compiled an impressive 20-0 record this year and every single player on this team of 7-10 year olds had an opportunity to run the ball during a game. Additionally from the coaching staff to the team, the Santa Monica Vikings represented more diversity than any of the teams they faced this season. |
